For almost all students, a university is about much more than taking classes, learning about a field of art, science, or engineering, and earning a degree. For most people, attending a university is a life experience. In the best situations, it offers the opportunity to expand your horizons, share viewpoints with others, make friends, discover or refine your direction and goals in life. Obviously, most of those experiences occur outside the classroom. For many, even traditional learning is most fulfilling outside the classroom. Now, it would be difficult, if not impossible, for us to replicate those functions and provide the type of pervasive environment that allows for personal growth the way a traditional university does. Nor do we believe that we should supplant the traditional university.
However, just because we're on online university shouldn't mean that we can't try to establish some framework for actual personal interactions between our students. This should be more feasible, especially in larger cities, after there's some form of critical mass of our students. Then, maybe we can arrange some form of get-togethers at coffee shops, museums, shows, etc; establish intramural sports teams (ultimate frisbee, soccer, etc.); or other social outings. Until then, hopefully, we can just lay some groundwork for it.
Suggestions and contributions to try to improve student affairs our always welcomed.
