Academic Performance Working Group

This working group is charged with the not-so-immediately-relevent goal of determining the appropriate academic standards for students to obtain to obtain a degree from the university (either before or after accreditation). Furthermore, once the university is functioning in a role more like a university and less like a university project, this working group will be responsible for enforcing the academic standards of the student body.

It is also necessary for this committee to determine the grading policy of the university. I've always been partial to one that tries to emphasize learning over obtaining grades; I've grown to believe this is often best accomplished by only employing pass / fail type grades on courses. However, practically, this probably does not allow sufficient record of true academic success; I enjoyed the system at my alma mater which employed only letter grades (i.e. A B C D F), greatly lessoning grade contention amongst classmates. I also very much appreciated the policy of not ranking students and also not conferring honors upon certain students (Cum Laude, etc.), which become dubious distinctions at certain universities where huge majorities of the graduating class obtain them. I personally believe there is a certain quiet dignity in the notion that the unadultered diploma is the best recognition for one's academic and personal success at an institute of higher learning.
